A study on the occupational therapists awareness on the elderly long-term care insurance system

Abstract
Objective: The Purpose of this study was to survey the perception of Korean occupational therapists on the elderly long-term care insurance system.

Methods: The questionnaire was distributed to 236 occupational therapists licensed in South Korea who attended at continuing education workshops and responded through E-mail. The study period was from April 25 to June 26, 2010. Two hundreds eleven responses were returned for quantitative analysis of chi-square cross-tabulations.

Results: 186 out of 211 occupational therapists responded that they are unaware of the term ``elderly long term care insurance system`` but occupational therapists showed higher interest. 85.5% of respondents were believed that occupational therapy helps to elderly long term care insurance system. The core important matters needed to improve elderly long term care insurance system were responded in the following order, supplementary classes opened by an organization, complementary legal. Individuals working in the rehabilitation hospital(p<.008) and with higher education(p<.001) showed a higher percentage of recognizing elderly long term care insurance system.

Conclusion: In order to systematically extend occupational therapists role in elderly long term care insurance system, more elderly long term care insurance system related courses should be incorporated into occupational therapy education program, other professionally related educations and supplementary classes opened by an organization need to be provided.
